"Haku!" A distressed voice echoed through the forest. Shadows pass through the trees until they reach a clearing and a herd emerges from the darkness. Immediately a battle starts as the stallions clash with the unknown herd they were fighting. Then silence, a larger black stallion moved towards the end of the clearing. A young brown and white colt was lying with his dam, who was the one that warned the herd of their enemy. The stallion lowered his head and nudged the mare, her lifeless body cold to the touch. Angrily the stallion reared and charged off into the forest, grief consuming him. Leaving the colt to the herd as they assured him that everything would be okay, they would take care of him. The colt being Haku would never forget that memory, as his father would tell him every day during his training that in order to be truly strong you could have no weaknesses even love was forbidden to him. His father was a great stallion admired throughout the lands and a hero to many. But he knew that when his mother died that something in his father did too, or so that's what he is told. Even though the lands were in peace, Haku still had to train for battle everyday. The herd came to admire Haku and accept him as the next leader. Which was a good thing because soon after Haku turned four his father disappeared, unknown if he was dead or alive the best trackers in the herd went to search for him. Months of travelling and he was no where to be found. Haku promised his herd that he would continue to search for his father but wouldn't abandon the herd which needed supplies. So jobs were taken to protect other herds from losing their lands and from rogue stallions/bands. The herd settled into a clearing deep into the forest where the mares with their young and the elderly could be protected even when the stallions were gone on a job.
Four years later...
"Haku, the lead of the keys herd is here." The dark and white stallion stood in the waterfall rinsing off the blood from their last battle. "I'll be right there Soren." The other stallion turned and returned to the clearing leaving the stallion alone. Haku stepped out of the water and shook off his coat. He would dry off in a while under the sun but for now his pelt would look even darker than usual. A tactic Soren usually pushes him into, not realizing this time too he was tricked. 'You look more intimidating' he would say... Not that he really needed it, the stories were enough to bring the helpless here begging for salvation. Ever since his father was a boy, herds have been coming here asking for strength. Haku sighed and started to walk out of the forest, once into the clearing where the herd spread out grazed and the young played and some trained for battle and some didn't. He was so proud of his herd, and he held his head up high as he made his way to Soren and two stallions. "Thank you for waiting." The two strangers bowed their heads in respect and Haku took in their appearances. One was a cremello with many scars and wounds easily seen on his light coat. The other was a bay and had much more scars and wounds than the other. "Haku, we are grateful you would meet with us." The light stallion looked up and his piercing blue eyes were strong and determined. "Our peninsula is being attacked by a rouge band of horses. They are incredibly strong and we have fought them many times but recently they have cut off our route to our water forcing my herd to drink from rain puddles or the ocean which has made many sick. I don't know how much longer we can stay there." He looked away, ashamed of his weakness. "Zeke I will send my best fighters to once and for all eradicate these bandits. We have fought them countless times and yet they still seem to grow." Soren nodded in agreement and loudly announced to the herd. "We're going to take a trip!" Many of the herd members cheered and gathered themselves to see who would go to fight. The mares rounded up the youngsters and took them to the creek, keeping them distracted from their sires and friends leaving. Zeke's eyes brightened as he watched the commotion build up for their sake. "Haku, before you start anything I'm afraid we don't have any payment available left since the rogues have come..." Soren's head snapped quick in anger, "YOU-" Haku stops him before he could get another word out, "Payment is not needed, I can not stand aside when you are asking for our help." Zeke bowed his head again, "Thank you!" Tears may have been running down his face but Haku was not one to pay attention to detail and looked away. They bay stud spoke quietly to Zeke and they exchanged a few quick words before turning to Haku again. "If we may not be so bold, but we can pay our debt with our princess. Since it has been said you haven't taken a mate yet." Soren nodded happily, "What a great agreement." Haku glared at him and the other stallions smiles faded. "That is too bold of you and I will not have a mate pushed onto me or this herd. No payment will suffice." And with that Haku walked away from the meeting and led the remaining warriors through the forest to the peninsula.
2 months later...
A white mare with a chestnut mane and tail raced to the top of the hill. Upon reaching the summit she whinnied at her father in delight. He was finally home, these past four months had been torture having the lead stallion away. Many times were they attacked and some herd members left in fear and some died from starvation. Looking over the two familiar faces, Usagi turned her eyes to the rest of the band. Instantly she was drawn to the strong brown and white stallion up front by her father, he looked like he had incredible strength. A shiver shook down her spine just from intimidation. "Princess!" A light and shaky voice called up to Usagi, "Princess, come down before you get dirty and displease your dam." Usa rolled her eyes but still followed Kay's orders. She knew that her mother made Kay climb up even with her fear of heights to call her down, "I'm coming Kay." She slowly climbed down the slope and helped Kay as well until they were safe on level ground. Usagi raced the young mare to her mother and won victoriously. Prancing proudly she approached her mother, India. "Goodness, you just bathed this morning Usa! I wish you had taken my coat color so it wouldn't look like you are dirty all the time." Her dam shook her head but quickly shot her head up in anticipation of her mate rounding the corner. "Go wash up in the ocean, I would rather you come late and be clean then have our warriors meet you like this." She looked over at Kay as a suggestion that she go as well, Kay reluctantly followed Usagi towards the beach. Knowing that Kay was also waiting for her mate, as soon as they were away from her mother's earshot told Kay to return, "I know the way Kay, besides I don't have anyone besides father coming..Go." Kay didn't even argue and sprinted back to welcome her love. Usagi sighed and continued on her way to the beach, just walking in the sand not wanting to get in the warm tropical waters. She travelled down the beach until she hit the tide pools and then made her way back. She did not want to go in the ocean, but she couldn't return dirty so she decided to go to her secret watering hole. It was selfish of her to hide precious water but if it got too busy then the bandits would come and take it away, so only those who were in dire thirst she brought and had them swear not to tell the others. Of course for the price of pure drinking water anyone would make a promise, Usa climbed through the brush and heard the water rushing up ahead. She picked up her pace as she pushed through the last bushes and entered the clearing. Frozen in her spot, Usagi stared at the stallion in her pool, he was the one from earlier that was up front with father. The intimidating dark stallion, closer up she could spot all his scars and how the bath darkened his colour even more. He looked over at her, knowing that she was there and the two stared at each other. Before she could even move a twig snapped behind her and a couple of bandits entered the clearing. "I told you following the daughter would be rewarding." The leader had a nasty grin on his facade and took a step closer to Usagi. The mare moved away quickly from the bandit but he snapped at her pelt, causing her to whinny out in pain and trip over her feet falling to the ground.
Tears involuntarily flowed down her face as she looks at her side, bleeding from the deep bite mark. "Oh poor baby, you know this can all stop if you agree to be mine." His deep voice makes Usagi cringe as she glared at him with her ears pinned back. "I would rather die!" The young mare shakily gets up and attempts to move away from the stallion. "I think that can be arranged.." He cackles but then quickly moves to the side avoiding Haku's attack. Usa completely forgot that he was in the spring! Why didn't he help her in the first place? Usagi continues to shakily walk attempting to escape back to the herd.
